What to Expect
Our behind-the-wheel program builds skills progressively. Students gain experience in residential neighborhoods, rural and county roads, downtown Kalamazoo, and on the freeway. Students are taught to choose safe speeds based on traffic, weather, road conditions, and posted limits.
Drive 1 — Foundations: Low-speed residential driving in the Westwood neighborhood surrounding Agape Christian Church. Students learn reference points, lane positioning, right and left turns, and other foundational skills.
Drive 2 — Building Skills: Introduces lane changes on larger roads, navigating traffic signals, and using designated left-turn lanes.
Drive 3 — City Driving: Adds light city traffic, additional lane changes, and intersections with multiple turn lanes.
Drive 4 — Downtown Driving: Introduces downtown Kalamazoo traffic, roundabouts, one-way streets, and parallel parking.
Drive 5 — Freeway Driving: Focuses on freeway entry, merging, lane positioning, maintaining safe following distances, and exiting.
Drive 6 — Comprehensive Review: Combines multiple driving environments to reinforce skills and assess readiness for continued supervised practice.
*Rural driving is incorporated throughout the program.
Progression and Completion
Students must demonstrate safe performance of each lesson’s objectives before advancing. Completing the scheduled lessons does not automatically guarantee a certificate. Students who have not met the course’s safety and completion requirements may need additional instruction before a certificate can be issued.
::::::: Notes ::::::
Makeup days are TBD and as needed (*weather cancellations, approved absences, etc.)
No class or drives on Sunday
No drives after 6pm on Wednesdays
Behind the wheel (BTW’s) sessions may take place right after school, during the day (for homeschoolers or non-traditional) and Saturdays.
If your school has in service days, etc. those may be utilized for scheduling purposes.
Drives typically begin after the second day of class
It is important that families maintain as open a schedule as possible for the duration of drivers training. Too many conflicts can disrupt a smooth and successful driver’s training experience.
Segment 1 requires that all students be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class. Each student is required to verify their date of birth by bringing a copy of their birth certificate to the first day of class. Parents will be able to send the instructor a photograph verifying the birthdate.
